High Tech Meets Old School - Hello GameCoach!
If you've ever dodged a basketball, hurled at your head by the kid who is repeating fourth grade for the fourth time or jogged 50 laps around the gym while trying to remember exactly which lap you're on, you've experienced the yin and the yang of old school P.E.
Even oldsters who are fond of reminiscing about how great it was "back in the day," immediately start nodding when the subject turns to how dumb gym class used to be. The operative words here are "used to be." That's because some kid-savvy, professional educators realized that physical education should be more than jumping jacks and wet towel popping.

Why Girls Hate PE Why We Should Care
If you could take a snapshot of the typical workout facility at 7 a.m. what you would see is pretty predictable. Lots of red faces, lots of people gasping for air, perspiration pouring out of every pore and wet heads all around. Men and women are running on treadmills, riding stationary bikes and pumping iron on the latest weight machine...completely oblivious to their appearance. Hey...they're working out. Who cares what they look like?
Now take that same snap shot at any middle school or high school gym class during school hours and you would witness a completely different phenomenon. Everyone is still sweaty and exhausted (as they should be), but there is a good possibility that the young women will be feeling LESS like strong and toned and more like limp-haired ogres. As is their SOP, the boys could care less about how they look or how they smell. In fact, if the PE instructor didn't make them clean up, most of the guys would forgo the shower altogether...forget about combing their hair.
So, PE class in middle and high school is another one of those "Venus and Mars" deals. The boys don't mind looking like they've just stepped on the basketball court and the girls want to look and smell like they just stepped off the runway.

Social Networks - Making Us Fat and Happy
As the world's population gets fatter, researchers keep trying to find out why. One of my old, laconic buddies from high school has a simple answer. "Well sir...everybody eats too much and they don't do nothing but sit in front of a computer and look at smut." Of course, he's partially right.
Most of us eat too much junk and spend all day staring at a computer screen. The "smut" is very much in the eye of the beholder. Lately, I've been shocked every time I click on a "business" website and my online 401K report. This may not be "smut" but it is definitely obscene!
The bigger questions are "WHY do we eat too much" and "WHY do we get no exercise?" It turns out that it's all about our FRIENDS!
